What My Podcast Will Teach You

Everybody wants attention. Almost nobody is willing to give it.
This is essentially how I found myself giving my latest talk, this time for PodMatch community, about using podcasting to build a referral pipeline.
And the questions afterward all pointed the same direction. How do I get started? How long does it take? What do I have to give?
Good questions. Wrong first question.

Here is what I have learned after fifteen years of building a business on referrals instead of ads: The people who win in this game are not the ones who found a clever new way to get attention, they are the ones who figured out how to give it away on purpose.
Think about your own week. How many messages did you get from someone who wanted something from you? A pitch, a link, a calendar invite dressed up as a coffee chat. Now count how many you got from someone who simply wanted to make you look good.
I would bet the second number is close to zero and that gap is your opportunity.
If you are a contractor, an insurance agent, a real estate agent, or any local service professional trying to grow through referrals, you are competing in an attention economy where the price of entry keeps going up. Ads cost more every year, cold outreach converts worse every year, content gets noisier every year...you hear me preaching this over and over again - it is a saturated marketing space.
Meanwhile, the cheapest, warmest, most underused move available to you is to point a microphone at somebody else and ask them a good question to genuinely help them promote themselves.
I am not talking about becoming a media company; I am talking about understanding what actually happens when you hand a person attention instead of asking for it.
They remember you. They talk about you. They send you the clip. They tell their spouse about it at dinner (or so that's how it plays out in my head anyway). They introduce you to the next person, without you asking, because you gave them something they cannot easily get anywhere else.
That is referral marketing and it just happens to have a microphone attached.
Most people treat podcasting like a billboard. Get on the show, say the thing, hope somebody in the audience calls, then the episode airs, nothing happens, and they decide podcasting does not work for their business.
Podcasting works fine, but the billboard mindset is what broke - at least as a primary goal for your business.
This week I want to take that idea apart and rebuild it with you and it all starts with the uncomfortable version of the question: Who have I given attention to lately, and what did it cost me to do it?
The answer is usually nothing. That is what makes it such a strange thing to leave on the table.
If you want the full system behind this, the Connector Blueprint is free at www.ReferralBlueprint.com. No gate, no pitch, just the map.
So tell me in the comments. When was the last time someone gave you their full attention without wanting anything back, and do you still remember who it was?
