The Weekend Assignment That Trains Your AI Eye

2 min read

This week I told you content isn't just marketing, and then I gave you four moves to prove it. The easy close here would be "stop letting AI run your content unsupervised," but I feel like you already know that and just telling you again doesn't change anything.

So instead, here's your assignment, and it's harder than it sounds.

Find five pieces of content you see on socials or in your DM this weekend that are clearly AI-generated. Doesn't matter if it's a competitor, a stranger, a brand, anyone.

Now here is the tougher part: for each one, write down exactly what gave it away, it can't be a vague feeling, or "it just looks AI." Write down the actual tell. Maybe it's a caption that could apply to any business in any city; maybe it's a stock photo that almost looks like a real job site, but the lighting is too perfect; maybe it's a message that hits all the right words and somehow says nothing at all. The more detailed you can get, the better your AI instincts become.

Most people can "feel" when something's AI, but almost nobody can explain why. That gap matters more than you think, because if you can't name what makes someone else's content feel fake, you can't catch it in your own. You're running on instinct, and instinct misses things, especially in your own work, because you already know what you meant to say.

Do this five times, and you stop guessing; you can start diagnosing.

Think of AI as the nurse, walks in, takes your temperature, checks your vitals, hands you the numbers fast and clean. Useful. Necessary, even. But a nurse doesn't treat the patient, nurse hasn't sat with them through three different problems over two years, doesn't know what question to actually ask next, that's the doctor's job. That's the part nobody automates, and it's the part contractors, insurance agents, and real estate agents are getting paid the big bucks to bring to their clients and their referral relationships.

Run the five-post exercise this weekend and actually write down what you find. If you get through it and realize you can't tell the difference, or worse, you realize your own stuff wouldn't pass the test, that's not a content problem anymore. That becomes a whole new conversation for you.

What's the first AI tell you're going to spot this weekend?
